The Silver Circle: West Iceland's Best Road Trip
Explore one of Iceland's most scenic driving routes, where waterfalls, geothermal wonders, lava caves and rich history come together in the heart of West Iceland.

If you've heard of Iceland's famous Golden Circle, it's time to discover its quieter, more authentic neighbour. The Silver Circle is one of West Iceland's most rewarding scenic routes, taking you through waterfalls, geothermal wonders, lava caves, historic landmarks and breathtaking landscapes—all without the large crowds.
Starting from Hotel Hamar in Borgarnes, the Silver Circle is an easy day trip that showcases some of Iceland's most remarkable natural attractions.
What is the Silver Circle?
The Silver Circle is a scenic driving route through West Iceland, connecting some of the region's most iconic sights. The journey is approximately 130 km (80 miles) and can comfortably be explored in a full day, with plenty of time to stop along the way.
Whether you're travelling in summer or winter, it's one of the best ways to experience Iceland beyond the usual tourist trail.
1. Deildartunguhver
Begin your journey at Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring.
Thousands of litres of boiling water surge from the ground every second, supplying much of West Iceland with geothermal heating. Walk along the viewing platforms and experience the incredible steam and energy of this unique natural wonder.
2. Krauma Geothermal Baths
Just next to Deildartunguhver, you'll find Krauma, one of Iceland's finest geothermal spas.
Here, naturally heated water from the hot spring is blended with cool glacier water to create perfect bathing temperatures. Relax in multiple pools, enjoy the sauna and steam bath, or simply take in the peaceful surroundings.
It's the perfect place to slow down during your road trip.
3. Reykholt
Continue to the historic village of Reykholt, once home to the famous medieval writer, historian and chieftain Snorri Sturluson.
Today, visitors can explore the cultural heritage of the area, visit Snorralaug—one of Iceland's oldest man-made geothermal baths—and learn about one of the country's most influential historical figures.
4. Hraunfossar
One of Iceland's most unique waterfalls, Hraunfossar stretches across a lava field where crystal-clear water flows directly from beneath the rocks into the river below.
Rather than a single waterfall, hundreds of small streams emerge from the lava, creating an unforgettable natural landscape.
It's one of West Iceland's most photographed locations.
5. Barnafoss
Only a short walk from Hraunfossar lies Barnafoss, a powerful waterfall known for its striking blue water and local folklore.
The rushing river cuts dramatically through a narrow canyon, creating a spectacular contrast to the calm beauty of nearby Hraunfossar.
6. Víðgelmir Lava Cave
For those looking for adventure, Víðgelmir is one of Iceland's largest lava caves.
Guided tours take visitors deep beneath the surface through colourful lava formations, massive caverns and fascinating geological features created thousands of years ago.
It's an unforgettable way to experience Iceland's volcanic history.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
The Silver Circle is beautiful all year round.
Summer offers green landscapes, long daylight hours and ideal driving conditions, while winter transforms the region into a snowy wonderland where frozen waterfalls and the chance of seeing the Northern Lights make every stop even more magical.
Stay at Hotel Hamar
